ABSTRACT

The objective of the present work is to present a methodology for the assessment of design q factors (behaviour coefficients) for reinforced concrete structures under seismic loading. For this purpose, a probabilistic approach based on damage indices and on non-linear analysis is used. The damage indices are those proposed by Miner and by Park and Ang. Of particular interest is the application of this methodology to irregular structures, investigating the sensitivity of the allowable q factors on their configuration, strength and ductility distribution. Some parametric studies are carried out, including the analysis of three plane frame reinforced concrete structures: one regular and two irregular ones (a soft-storey and a setback).
