ABSTRACT

The revised version of Russian Seismic Building Code (SBC) is developed recently. The lessons of the recent strong earthquakes, Armenia-Spitak, December 7, 1988, Turkey-Erzincan, March 13, 1992, Northridge, 1994, Sakhalin - Neftegorsk, 1995, Japan-Kobe, 1995 were taken into account during the Code revision, as well as the results of scientific researches.

The Code- makers have tried to eliminate or to smooth some sufficient controversions which exist in the Russian Code as well as in other Codes. Also some conceptual design recommendations are included to avoid premature collapses due to undesirable types of failures, deformations, cracks, displacements, causing gravitational collapses. These Code changes are directed to increase the survivability of structures under high seismic loads even higher than the predicted ones.
