ABSTRACT

Comparisons are made between the provisions for the earthquake resistant design of reinforced concrete (R/C) structures in Eurocode 8 and those from three other countries, namely USA, New Zealand and Japan. The paper gives particular emphasis to the design of concrete frame structures. Likely future developments to codes in the four regions are outlined. Recommendations are made for aspects of the concrete provisions of EC8 that should be reviewed during the process of its conversion from its current draft ‘ENV’ status into a full Euronorm (EN) standard.
