ABSTRACT

An investigation is carried out of the effect of rock bolts on stress distribution around underground excavations, the rock mass being assumed as a homogeneous, isotropic, linearly elastic material. Firstly, an anlytical basis for the assessment of the elastic stress field due to bolts in an isotropic, two-dimensional infinite medium is developed. On this basis, modification of a boundary element method computer program is carried out, in order that the effect of rockbolting on the gravitational stress distribution around underground excavations be investigated.
