ABSTRACT

Recently a theory has been developed to ayalyse the load deformation behaviour of fully grouted dock bolts subject to shear. The theory was adapted for inclusion in a design philosophy for slope stability analyses. Following the design, a trial section of an open pit was reinforced. This paper briefly describes the design technique, stability requirements and results of passively reinforcing the benches in the mine. The influence of geology, rock strength and properties of the rock bolt and grout are taken into account in the design. Problems associated with field installation are identified. The results of the study indicate that while the method is satisfactory, evaluation of improvements to the stability due to the reinforcing can be influenced by unexpected factors.
