ABSTRACT

Joint ventures are very important to the nations bordering on the Pacific and Indian oceans. In this chapter, we describe joint ventures around the world but with emphasis on Pacific rim operations. Two types of ventures are identified: contractual ventures and equity arrangements. It is concluded that joint ventures will continue to play an important role for the foreseeable future. Nevertheless, serious problems may be encountered in ensuring mutual benefit, upgrading coastal state capabilities, and the like. The need for further research and knowledge sharing is stressed.
