ABSTRACT

This paper introduces a part of the Civil Engineering works for the Large Hadron Collider project at CERN, near Geneva. The package is characterised by logistical complexity and continuing imposed change to scope and programme constraints. The construction contract is a modified FIDIC form. A Supplemental Agreement was made during the construction period, introducing a target cost mechanism with gainsharing incentives to Client and Contractor to minimise project out-turn cost. Construction is largely underground, but also has significant surface elements. The construction contract was let for CHF84M (€57.5 M), and work on site began in 1998.
