ABSTRACT

Terneuzen – Under the Westerschelde is a hive of activity – the construction of the Westerschelde Tunnel. Nowhere else in the world is a similar project being carried out under conditions like this. Specific experiences were limited and gradually gathered during the project progress. The Westerschelde Tunnel is one of the longest bored tunnels in the world, whilst the deepest point lies 60 m beneath NAP. A number of phases can be distinguished during the boring process of such tunnel(s). The boring and fitting-out stages are the most extensive processes. The disruptions also contributed to the integration of the boring and fitting out processes. The repairs of the main bearing and the brush sealing will be explained in more detail. The next restraint was that the boring head had to be de-pressured. A number of alterations to the drilling head had to be made for the concreting of the space between the cutting wheel and the drilling face.
