ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the tunnelling works carried out under the very old city of Copenhagen using EPB Tunnel Boring Machines and the New Austrian Tunnelling Method. The layout of the Copenhagen Metro is a consequence of a series of requirements based on the strengthening and development of a certain area in Copenhagen. A close relationship between the contractor and the client was formed to develop the data base with as much information as possible, which, in the future, could form valuable information in the design of possible extensions of the Copenhagen Metro. The scope of the tunnel construction is described, including a summary of the geological conditions and how these have influenced the design and construction of the tunnels. A review of the construction phase for the tunnels is included with statistics for progress. The Metro system currently under construction consists of a dual track system with each track used for train traffic in only one direction.
