ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to figure out the tendency of the ground convergence during tunnel construction and to present a methodology for the prediction of fault zones ahead of a tunnel face by analyzing three-dimensional tunnel covergences in various ways. 3-D numerical analysis was performed to investigate changes of tunnel convergence vectors near a fault zone and to propose methods of analyzing in-situ data of displacements. Results of site investigation data such as geological investigation near surface seismic exploration and electric resistivity survey as well as results of trend line analysis using in-situ data were compared with the results of 3-D numerical analysis to ascertain usefulness of trend line analysis for the prediction of fault zones ahead of a tunnel face.
