ABSTRACT

The 1.8 km Tsing Tsuen Tunnels form part of the 3.6km Kwai Tsing Tunnels which are a key component of the new Kowloon and Canton Railway Corporation’s (KCRC) West Rail Project, which is to serve the Western New Territories of Hong Kong, SAR. The Design and Build Contract was awarded to the Dragages Zen Pacific Joint Venture on the basis of an alternative tender employing a Earth Pressure Balance Tunnel Boring Machine as an alternative to the conforming cut & cover and drill and blast excavation. The tunnels pass through urban areas and the construction methods were selected to minimise the impact on the urban environment and adjacent structures.
