ABSTRACT

Amsterdam City Council is building a new metro line from the North part of the town to the South, called the North–South line. The metro line passes under Amsterdam Central Station about 18 m below street level. The construction of the metro at this depth below the existing station – a listed building with masonry façades – could cause damage because of settlement in the foundation. This paper presents an overview of the calculations carried out to predict damage in the façade due to foundation settlement.
