ABSTRACT

Tunneling with tunnel boring machines in hard rock is numbered among the most advanced construction processes pertaining to the mechanization of the boring process. This also applies to the installations for the temporary support and for the final lining. In addition, computer-aided process systems have been developed. It has been shown in the past that although boring machine technology is far advanced, the performance is still greatly influenced by the proper selection and design of the appropriate ground support directly behind the cutterhead as well as by the installation of the final lining in the vicinity of the back-up system.
