ABSTRACT

The lining segments of shield tunnels used to be designed up to now by a routine method. This method ignores the existence of joint of segment and simplifies all sorts of pressure. The calculation results, therefore, become different from real behavior and the quantitative confirmation of safety turns out not enough. Then, a new design method is proposed after several experiments and analyses were carried out to evaluate all kinds of pressure and to grasp the ground deformation. This paper describes the concepts of this new design method for railway shield tunnels.
