The use of models in the design of deep underground metro stations in Amsterdam

The underground metro network in Amsterdam is to be extended with the new North/South Metro line. The stations are located at busy locations close to historic buildings and have to be constructed in difficult soft soil conditions. The design philosophy of the deep station boxes was to determine an acceptable balance between safety requirements and construction costs. This paper will focus on the modelling that is performed as an essential part to this philosophy
