ABSTRACT

The Southern Link road tunnel project is at the stage where complementary works are now being conducted. The plan is that the tunnels will be opened to traffic in 2004. While fibre-reinforced shotcrete with alkali-free accelerator has been used with success in the Southern Link, other areas have shown the need for further development. Consideration must be given to modifying the test methods for flexural strength, as the beam tests used sometimes proved to be uncertain. Further, some unexpected sporadic cracks have occurred, the cause of which still has not been fully investigated. Several interesting ideas for improving the shotcrete method have been proposed.
