ABSTRACT

The objective of this research is to explore the technology to apply tunneling methods in the design and construction of large-scale underground facilities with shallow overburdens (between 2m and 10 m). In the method studied here, the roof portion is constructed in the non-open cut method using combined technologies such as the NATM or shield tunneling method, by making use of the structure’s arch action to bear the loads without relying on the arch effects of the ground. As a result of a domestic survey, shallow underground facilities were found to be quite common in Japan. The large-section shallow tunneling method studied here can be effectively used for such underground facilities as underground parking lots, underpass crossings and subway stations, and it is effective to combine the NATM, shield tunneling and jacking-up methods in roof construction.
