ABSTRACT

A new method of controlling rates of release of pollution from road tunnel portals is described. The method is still under development, but plans are well advanced for its application to a real tunnel. The first such tunnel will be longitudinally ventilated and will have one-way traffic. The technical basis of the method is described and an example of its use is given. It is shown to offer valuable advantages to tunnel operators, including predictive information as well as cost savings.
