ABSTRACT

The North/South Metroline is a new bored metroline underneath the city of Amsterdam. The evacuation of the deep stations are of main importance to reach an acceptable safety level. As current legislation in the Netherlands does not provide a safety framework for underground structures a project specific concept had to be developed. The stations are designed to function as “Safe Havens” in case of emergencies in the tunnel or station. Several measures are taken to enable a safe and rapid evacuation. Exits on both sides of each platform, a clear and transparent layout and the use of escalators will lead to evacuation times of about 6 minutes by rush hour scenarios. The stations are furthermore equipped with emergency power supplies, smoke and heat extraction systems, fire proofing etc. to prevent or control incidents.
