tunnel concept. Conventional composite steel/concrete tunnel elements are fixed to pile foundations. The piles act in light tension in normal operation, and have redundancy for tension and compression in case of earthquake or during a flooding incident. An example of a potential application site for the elevated immersed tunnel is Lake Washington, located in the Pacific Northwest of the United States.
