ABSTRACT

While excavating a large section tunnel in jointed rock masses, opening and sliding of joints are prone to occur, and such behaviors of the rock masses should be accurately predicted. The authors applied Micromechanics-based Continuum Model (MBC model), which can consider the behavior of joints, to large section tunnels, and compared these results with the conventional analytical methods. Then MBC model is found to be more effective analytical method with high accuracy. And the model is also applied to the case with supports and showed that supports effectively restrict the opening of joints and convergence.
