ABSTRACT

Concrete gravity dam, 110 m high, 1470 m long, was constructed in Republic of Angola on the Kwanza River by the design of “Institute Hydroproject”, Russia. Construction is effected by Capanda Consortium including “Technopromexport” – General Contractor and “Odebrecht” – Brazilian civil company. Results of testing core samples, drilled out and tested before 1992 and in 1998–2001 allow one to consider quality of RCC and joints in dam body as meeting the design requirements in compression and shear strength of joints. Split-tensile strength values of RCC at mature age have been obtained. Shear and direct shear strength tests of horizontal construction joints provided experimental, standard and design values of shear strength of joints in the dam thus making it possible to carry out check shear strength analysis of the dam for assessment of its state before starting reservoir impoundment.
