ABSTRACT

Salto Caxias hydroelectric project is in operation since 1998 and during the preparations for the closing of the dam, towards the end of August 1988, a crack was detected in block 11 of the RCC dam, situated on the river bed, close to the left bank. The crack extended throughout the dam’s whole section and some corrective measures were taken, type waterstop expanding, nucleated, structural elastic sealing joint, in the dam’s upstream face. Later, in July 1999, a crack was detected in Block B5’s upper gallery and in September 1999 another crack was detected in Block B8’s upper gallery. In Block B5’s and Block B8’s lower galleries a crack was detected, respectively in March 2000 and January 2000. This report shows, briefly, the measures taken to seal these cracks without success. Studies made by the Designer arrived at the conclusion that this seepage has no influence on the dam’s stability, and, therefore there is no risk to the integrity of the structure.
