ABSTRACT

The Puding Dam was the first RCC arch dam in China which incorporated RCC materials and the new dam building techniques developed in the National Eighth Five Year Science and Technology Research Program of China. It’s an asymmetrical double curvature arch dam with a fixed center, variable radius, variable central angle and uniform thickness. The RCC used was featured by high flyash content and low cement content and was the only anti-seepage element of the dam. Quality inspection and seven years’ operation of water retaining shows that, in similar conditions, the cracking resistance of RCC is much superior to that of conventional concrete. The energy dissipater also works very well. The overall quality of the Puding Dam is much better than that of other arch dams built about the same period in foreign countries. And its many mechanical indices and physical properties are superior to or bear comparison with that of the conventional concrete dams built during the same period in China.
