ABSTRACT

Morocco was among the first countries to adopt RCC technology in dams’ construction. Its first RCC dam was completed in 1987. Morocco counts currently nine operating RCC dams and three under construction.

Through this experience, a proper local technology in RCC dams design and construction was developed. For small and medium size dams, due to specific local conditions, a method of construction using intensive manpower was initiated.

For large structures, modern mechanized construction approach was adopted. As OPC is the unique available cementitious material, a dosage in the range of 80 to 100 kg/m3 is adopted. Watertightness is provided by systematic horizontal joints treatment with bedding mix. A narrow formed conventional concrete strip (20 cm width) is provided in the faces mainly for aesthetic reasons. Under high ambient temperature, the use of superplasticiser at a dosage of 3 to 4% by weight of cement content, allowed RCC placement satisfactorily.
