ABSTRACT

In this paper a procedure for two-dimensional unsteady thermo-mechanical analysis of layered structures is presented, allowing the determination of the temperature and stress fields at each step of the construction period. The finite element method commercial software ANSYS® is employed in the methodology. The software has several features for pre- and post-processing and a built-in design language APDL, which is used to implement the proposed methodology. The developed technique is general and can be applied to a variety of layered structures. Numerical simulations are focused on concrete structures, particularly roller compacted concrete (RCC) dams. A time-varying elasticity modulus is introduced in the model. One case study is presented and analyzed under different design approaches.
