ABSTRACT

In order to provide safe drinking water, the United States Forest Service (USFS) must comply with the requirements of the United States Environmental Protection Agency, particularly the Surface Water Treatment Rule (SWTR). The USFS has been actively working to develop a small, portable package plant that can meet the performance and continuous monitoring requirements of the SWTR. As the system developed, it became apparent that the minimum size of key components such as the filtration and disinfection systems were capable of much greater capacity. The limiting criteria became the power requirements to operate the on-board disinfection system. The unit incorporates patented mixed-oxidant disinfection technology as well as cartridge filtration technology from 3M Corporation for turbidity reduction and Giardia and Cryptosporidium removal. The system has two operational flow rates that are manually selectable, and the disinfection system automatically adjusts mixed oxidant dose rates to maintain chlorine residuals within prescribed limits in the storage tank.
