ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the sustainable design philosophy as well as redesign principles which directly relate to small systems. Some of these principles include: Conservation, Use of Renewable Energy Sources, Low Technological Solutions, Cultural/Social Resource Preservation, and Remediation/Ecosystem Restoration and Enhancement. The philosophy of sustainable design can be used as a tool to ensure that natural and cultural resources can survive for future generations to enjoy and appreciate. Understanding the idea and philosophy of sustainable design is just the first step. The real challenge is applying these principles into design projects for water supply development. Admittedly, this is not always easy to do; however, after some effort it becomes second nature. The idea of sustainable design and development is obviously not a new one; however, it is important for each generation to revisit the theory and implement design principles that make sustainability possible.
