ABSTRACT

Production is predominately of green podded types, but yellow podded beans are grown in most major production areas and may account for 15 % of all processed snap beans. Nearly all commercial production of snap beans in the United States employs cultivars having the determinate, bush plant habit and concentrated pod maturity that are favorable for machine harvesting. Many of the states in which snap beans are produced publish specific recommendations for field production of the crop, usually as a section in booklets containing recommendations for each of many vegetable crops. The best herbicides to use depend upon the species of the major problem weeds and which herbicides are registered for use on snap beans. For the classes of dry beans produced in the United States or snap beans produced in some other countries, such pathogen-free seed is either available or available in sufficient quantity to be universally used so that anthracnose is still a problem.
