ABSTRACT

Sweet corn is grown commercially throughout North and South America, as well as in most agricultural regions worldwide. Although, historically, sweet corn has been as popular in European and Asian countries as it is in the United States, it is rapidly becoming an international crop. Techniques used and specific objectives of breeding programs will be discussed as a separate topic. The main stem terminal section develops into a staminate inflorescence called the tassel. The production of hybrid sweet corn seed has evolved as a separate industry from that of hybrid field corn. The sweet corn seed industry is concentrated in the southern part of Idaho where environmental conditions are favorable for the production and maturation of a high-quality seed crop. A deep, naturally rich, and well-drained soil is suited for sweet corn, although it can be grown successfully on most well-drained soils with the proper pH adjustment and fertility maintenance.
