ABSTRACT

This paper reports results from a survey of 308 tick bite victims who reported their fears, behaviors and changes in lifestyle in response to the threat of Lyme Disease. As the result of fears of Lyme Disease, many reported giving up: gardening, walking through the woods, sitting on their lawns, visiting public parks, hiking, camping, picnicking and other outdoor activities. Nearly four percent of the sample also reported being afraid to go outdoors at all. The results suggest that for some people, the fear of tick bites has changed the way they relate to nature.
