ABSTRACT

This chapter provides some methods for more rounded evaluations of ultraviolet (UV) capabilities. Based on the analytical data obtained from the bench-scale test, it was assumed that the full-scale UV-Peroxide unit would also be capable of treating the ground water to the treatment goals for all contaminants. The laboratory work only showed that the pure chemistry of UV-Peroxide would work. Long-term operation was completely ignored in all of this work. As with the SITE program, everyone assumed that if it works for four hours, it would work for the whole year. A cost comparison between the initial estimate and the actual costs for the full-scale UV-Peroxide oxidation unit reflect a 24% increase in cost for additional and unanticipated modifications. The bulk of these costs was based on installing a pretreatment system, procuring additional chemicals, and requiring a greater amount of operator attention.
