ABSTRACT

The pollen diagram was derived from sediments collected from behind a previously unrecorded moraine at an altitude of 4 265 m in the Hobley Valley. This diagram enables us to determine a minimum age for glacial retreat from moraines at this altitude. The pollen diagram has been constructed with the prime aim of establishing a minimum date of glacial retreat from the moraine. However, the evidence for rates of sediment accumulation at other montane sites in East Africa indicates that the rate was slower prior to the onset of drier conditions. The rate of sediment accumulation varies considerably from site to site, but again Lake Kimilili with a sedimentation rate after 4170 BP of approximately 1.5 times that before that date, provides the best analog.
