ABSTRACT

As introduction a brief description is given of the new Swiss Transalpine Railway Link (AlpTransit). It includes an overview of the technical concept and its special challenges, as well as information on the current planning stage.

In the second part, safety management of infrastructure projects is discussed from a general point of view, focusing on three important elements:

A sound and comprehensive safety management policy,

a responsible and adaptable safety management organization and

tools and criteria for identifying, assessing and evaluating the different technical, financial and environmental risks based on a common safety concept.

In the third part an illustration is given of how such a safety management plan is implemented within the Swiss project AlpTransit. It is shown how the current risk management activities fit into a long-term policy, ensuring that the AlpTransit link can be operated safely and economically.
