ABSTRACT

Roadway deformations result in elevated rolling resistances and the destruction of the road itself. There are conceptually three behavioural zones: plastic rutting around the tyre, fully elastic at a distance from the truck and a hybrid semi-elastic zone in between. It is the semi elastic zone which is of most interest here. It is particularly marked in some soft oilsands roads where a 'roll' can often be observed around vehicles.

The authors have investigated the semi elastic zone using photogrammetry and tiltmeters. An attempt is made to tie observations with a simple elastic (Boussinesq) solution for a point load on a semi infinite half space.
