ABSTRACT

Before the Second World War, all students had to pay their lecture fees to attend the university and if they failed to attend lectures, they were plainly stupid. But after the war, when the Commonwealth Reconstruction and Training Scheme was paying the fees for returned ex-servicemen and not only paying their fees, but living expenses in addition, many students took second jobs in the city and did not attend their lectures. So, the Commonwealth Reconstruction and Training Scheme offices requested the university to get the various schools at the university to call the roll to ascertain which students were not attending.
