ABSTRACT

During the preparations for one of his polar expeditions, Fridtjof Nansen (1861–1930) was visited by a stout man who wanted to sign on for Nansen’s future expedition. The man took a seat in front of the polar investigator with his bowler bravely on top of his head. Nansen had to get good qualities in the men he hired and to test this man, he reached for a revolver, aimed at the man and pulled off a bullet through the man’s hat. The latter did not react at all.
