ABSTRACT
John Talbot, Earl of Shrewsbury, born near Whitchurch in 1373, was a renowned soldier who, after many battles, fell at Castillon at the battle of Bordeaux in 1453. Shakespeare in Henry VI, Act 2, describes him as:
The scourge of France,
The Talbot so much feared abroad,
That with his name, the mothers still their babes.
