ABSTRACT
Aesclepiades was a Greek physician who practised in Rome during the first century bc. So confident was he of his own medical competence that he maintained he would no longer claim the title of physician should he ever become ill. Subsequently he had the good taste to die, while still in the bloom of health, by plunging down a staircase. His reputation survived his fatal fall!
