ABSTRACT
In the early part of the eighteenth century, for every person hanged at Tyburn, four would die of jail fever in Newgate prison before they could be hanged. Jail fever was the result of bad sanitation and overcrowding and it was not limited to London; for example in 1577 at an assize in Oxford, some 300 persons died.
