ABSTRACT

When the death penalty was still in force in the United Kingdom, an Englishman and an American were exchanging experiences on the problem of completing life insurance forms when, as in both their cases, their fathers were found guilty of murder and the ultimate sentence was passed on them. The American’s solution was to write that his father met with an accident when he was in the Chair of Applied Electricity, whereas the Englishman’s solution was to write that his father died when the platform gave way at a public event.
