ABSTRACT

This photograph shows a pharmacy with a difference. It was taken several kilometres from Ho Chi Minh City in 1994 when visiting a snake farm as a tourist attraction. The cure-all medicine is seen on the far right in eight bottles in which a small (dead!) snake is clearly seen. The liquid is the local ‘firewater’. On the far left is a single jar of ‘pickled snake in alcohol’ containing a much larger specimen. Apparently when the cork is removed, the stench is one of the worst in the world: however, I was not brave enough to confirm this!
