ABSTRACT

Snakes are not the only animals to be pickled in alcohol (see Vietnamese Cobra Tonic, page 432) and perhaps the most well known is the so called ‘worm’ in a bottle of Mexican tequila. This worm is in fact a larva which is found on the leaves of the agave plant from which tequila is made. It looks rather like a small black caterpillar about 2 cm in length. It is said that those who actually eat the worm are subject to hallucinations!
