ABSTRACT
When this famous physician was once called in consultation about a young lady, it chanced that he passed her open bedroom door on his way to meet her mother. He walked straight up to this lady saying ‘Madam, I congratulate you, your daughter will get quite well’. The mother was taken aback and said ‘but you have not seen her’. He replied ‘Madam, I saw her through the open door of her bedroom, that was quite enough’. Gull had been told that the patient had typhoid; he saw her sitting up in bed; any sufferer from typhoid who sits up in bed must be doing well!
