ABSTRACT
In 1757 a member of a sect of flagellants, André Ivanov, founded the sect of the Skoptzy, or castrates, or origenists. He commenced by castrating himself, then he mutilated his 13 disciples, the first apostles of the new religion. Arrested, he was tortured with the knout, and deported to Siberia where he died.
