ABSTRACT

Several years before he received a Nobel Prize for his discovery of the first virus that induces solid tumours in animals, F Peyton Rous visited Pennsylvania State University as a Sigma Xi lecturer. During his free afternoon, I had planned to take Dr Rous on a walking tour of our campus, visiting laboratories which might interest him. But he demurred, saying that we probably didn't sufficiently appreciate our good fortune in having beautiful countryside within walking distance of the campus. He opted for a walk in the fields.
