ABSTRACT

In 1927 C H T Townsend reported on his studies of the anatomy of the Cephenemyia and his observations of their flight. 'On 12000 foot summits m New Mexico,' he wrote, 'I have seen pass me at an incredible velocity what were quite certainly the males of Cephenemyia. I could barely distinguish that something had passed—only a brownish blur in the air of about the right size for these flies and without sense of form. As closely as I can estimate, their speed must have approximated 400 yards per second [818 mph].'
