ABSTRACT

This paper presents the results of a study into the application of neurofuzzy techniques to model performance of tunnel boring machines. It is shown that this method gives better results than other, more conventional modelling approaches. Fuzzy set theory, fuzzy logic and neural network techniques seem very well suited for typical engineering geological applications. In conjunction with statistics and conventional mathematical methods, hybrid models can be developed that may prove a step forward in engineering geology.
