ABSTRACT

The “NARAI excavation system” has been developed, that performs optimum excavation with minimized overbreak. The system combines excavator position/posture measurement instruments with a cutter boom numerical control function. The cutter drum position relative to the preset cutting section is recognized automatically and in real time, and displayed on a screen. The control system outputs signals to the boom hydraulic circuit to prevent the cutter drum from exceeding the preset section. This function enables highly accurate cutting, regardless of operator’s skill. Long period continuous operation of this system was implemented for the first time, resulting in satisfactory excavation. This paper discusses the overview of the system and application results.
