ABSTRACT

Geotechnical engineering problems associated with construction of Bangkok Metro are hig h-lighted how to predict short-term ground deformation in deep excavations of soft Bangkok clay. A concrete box at each station site was constructed by means of top-down construction method with diaphragm walls pre-installed 35 m deep in the dense sand layer through soft as well as stiff clay layers of 22 m thick. Prior to excavation work, the engineering properties of Bangkok clay, including the variation of clay stiffness with depth and with strain were thoroughly examined. In this paper, the predictions of soft clay ground behavior by FE analysis incorporating the results of site investigation are discussed in relation to the field behavior.
